How this is calculated

length × width × (thickness in ÷ 12) = cubic feet · × 145 lb/ft³ (hot-mix density) ÷ 2,000 = tons. Density varies by mix (about 140–150 lb/ft³) — confirm with your plant. Order a little extra for edges and handwork.

This is a planning estimate — always confirm against your supplier and the specifics of the job before ordering.

Asphalt calculator: FAQ

How much asphalt do I need?

Multiply length × width × thickness (in feet) for the volume, then by about 145 lb/ft³ and divide by 2,000 for tons. A 40 × 20 ft driveway at 2 inches is roughly 9.7 tons.

How many tons of asphalt per square foot?

It depends on thickness. At a compacted 2-inch depth, figure roughly 0.012 tons (about 24 lb) per square foot of hot-mix asphalt.

How thick should an asphalt driveway be?

A typical residential driveway is 2–3 inches of asphalt surface over a compacted aggregate base. Heavier loads or poor soil call for more.
