How this is calculated
area ÷ 32 sq ft = 4×8 sheets · area ÷ 48 sq ft = 4×12 sheets · × 1.10 for waste. Joint compound is estimated at roughly one gallon per 320 sq ft of board. Fewer, larger sheets mean fewer seams to tape — worth it on tall walls.
This is a planning estimate — always confirm against your supplier and the specifics of the job before ordering.
Drywall calculator: FAQ
How many sheets of drywall do I need?
Divide the total area you are covering by the sheet size — 32 sq ft for a 4×8 sheet, 48 sq ft for a 4×12 — and add about 10% for waste and cuts. A 500 sq ft job is about 18 sheets of 4×8.
Should I use 4×8 or 4×12 drywall?
Larger 4×12 sheets create fewer seams and a cleaner finish, which saves taping time on long or tall walls — but they are heavier and harder to handle. 4×8 is the easier standard for most rooms.
How much joint compound do I need?
Plan on roughly a gallon of ready-mix compound per 320 square feet of drywall for taping and three coats. Textured finishes use more.
