How this is calculated
area (ft²) ÷ tile area (ft²) × 1.10 for waste = tiles. Tile area = (tile side in inches ÷ 12)². Diagonal and herringbone layouts waste more — closer to 15%. Buy all your tile in one dye lot so the color matches.

How many tiles do I need?
Divide the area you are tiling by the area one tile covers, then add about 10% for cuts and breakage. A 10 × 8 ft floor (80 sq ft) with 12×12 tiles needs about 88 tiles.
How much extra tile should I buy?
About 10% for a standard straight layout, and 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns or a room with lots of cuts. Keep a few spares for future repairs.
How do I calculate tile for a shower?
Add up the area of each wall you are tiling (and the floor), then treat the total like any tiled area. Subtract large openings like a niche only if they are significant.
