How this is calculated

length × width = floor area · × 1.10 for cutting waste · ÷ coverage per box = boxes (rounded up). Diagonal or herringbone layouts waste more — bump the waste allowance to 15% for those.

This is a planning estimate — always confirm against your supplier and the specifics of the job before ordering.

Flooring calculator: FAQ

How much flooring do I need?

Measure the room’s length and width, multiply for the area, add about 10% for cuts and waste, then divide by the square feet each box covers (printed on the box, often 20–24 sq ft).

How much extra flooring should I buy for waste?

About 10% for a standard straight layout. Go to 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns, or for rooms with lots of cuts and angles. Buy it all at once so the dye lot matches.

How many boxes of flooring do I need?

Divide your total area (including waste) by the coverage per box, then round up. A 15×12 room with 22 sq ft boxes needs 9 boxes at 10% waste.
