How this is calculated

area (ft²) × depth (in) ÷ 12 = cubic feet · ÷ 27 = cubic yards · × 1.4 ≈ tons (typical for crushed stone). Aggregate is usually sold by the ton, so the tons figure is what you order.

This is a planning estimate — always confirm against your supplier and the specifics of the job before ordering.

Gravel calculator: FAQ

How much gravel do I need?

Multiply the area by the depth in feet (inches ÷ 12), divide by 27 for cubic yards, then multiply by about 1.4 for tons. A 200 sq ft area at 3 inches is roughly 1.85 yards, about 2.6 tons.

How many tons of gravel are in a cubic yard?

Crushed stone and gravel weigh roughly 1.4 tons per cubic yard, though it varies by material and moisture. Suppliers usually sell by the ton.

How deep should a gravel layer be?

Two to three inches for a top-up or path; four inches or more (often over a base layer) for a driveway that will carry vehicles.
