Working across provinces means the right rate on every invoice, not the rate your office happens to sit in. Hero365 puts tax on the invoice when the job closes and keeps the totals ready for your return.

How this is calculated
Adding tax: price × (1 + rate). Extracting it from a tax-included total: total × rate ÷ (1 + rate) — in Ontario that is 13/113, not 13% of the gross. Taking the flat percentage off a tax-inclusive figure overstates the tax every time.
Canada is three regimes at once, which is why the province drives everything here. Harmonized provinces charge a single combined HST. The PST provinces charge 5% GST plus a separate provincial tax on the same pre-tax price — not stacked on the GST — and Quebec's QST works the same way. Alberta and the territories charge the 5% GST alone.

GST/HST Calculator: FAQ
How do you calculate HST?
Multiply the pre-tax price by the province’s rate. In Ontario at 13% HST, a $1,000 job is $1,000 × 1.13 = $1,130, of which $130 is tax. To go the other way and find the HST inside a tax-included total, multiply the total by 13/113 rather than taking 13% of it — the tax in a $1,130 total is $130, not $146.90.
What is the difference between GST, HST and PST?
GST is the 5% federal tax and applies everywhere. In the harmonized provinces it is combined with the provincial portion into a single HST line — 13% in Ontario, 15% in most of Atlantic Canada. The PST provinces charge the 5% GST plus a separate provincial tax on the same pre-tax price, and Quebec’s QST works the same way at its own rate. Alberta and the territories charge the 5% GST alone.
Which province’s rate do I charge?
Generally the one where the supply is made, not where your business is registered. For work on a building that is the location of the property, so a contractor based in Alberta doing a job in Ontario is normally charging Ontario HST. The place-of-supply rules have real edge cases — check CRA guidance for anything you are not sure of rather than defaulting to your home province.
Do I have to charge GST/HST?
Only once you are registered. Registration becomes mandatory when your revenues pass the CRA’s small-supplier threshold, and many trades register voluntarily before that so they can claim input tax credits on materials, tools and fuel. If you are not registered you must not charge it.
Is PST charged on top of the GST?
No — in the PST provinces both are normally calculated on the same pre-tax price rather than the provincial tax being stacked on the federal one. That is how this calculator treats them. Quebec used to compound QST on the GST-inclusive amount but no longer does. As always, the rates and the treatment are the CRA’s and the province’s to change.
