How this is calculated

area (ft²) × depth (in) ÷ 12 = cubic feet · ÷ 27 = cubic yards · ÷ 2 = number of 2 cu ft bags. Bulk mulch is sold by the yard and is far cheaper than bags for anything over a yard or two.

This is a planning estimate — always confirm against your supplier and the specifics of the job before ordering.

Mulch calculator: FAQ

How much mulch do I need?

Multiply the bed area by the depth in feet (inches ÷ 12), then divide by 27 to get cubic yards. A 200 sq ft bed at 3 inches deep needs about 1.85 cubic yards.

How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?

A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so it takes about 13–14 of the standard 2 cubic foot bags. For more than a yard or two, bulk delivery is much cheaper.

How deep should mulch be?

Two to three inches is ideal for most beds — enough to suppress weeds and hold moisture without smothering roots. Three inches is a good default.
