How this is calculated

Rectangle: length × width × average depth. Oval: π × (length ÷ 2) × (width ÷ 2) × depth. Round: π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × depth. Then × 7.48 to convert cubic feet to gallons.

Average depth = (shallow end + deep end) ÷ 2. The 8-hour turnover figure is the flow (gallons per minute) needed to cycle the whole pool through the filter in eight hours.

How many gallons is my pool?

Multiply length × width × average depth for a rectangular pool, then multiply by 7.48 to convert cubic feet to gallons. A 32 × 16 ft pool with a 5 ft average depth holds about 19,100 gallons. Round and oval pools use the area of the ellipse instead.

How do I find my pool’s average depth?

Add the shallow-end depth and the deep-end depth and divide by two. For a pool that’s 3 ft in the shallow end and 7 ft in the deep end, the average depth is 5 ft.

Why does pool volume matter?

Every chemical dose — chlorine, acid, stabilizer — is calculated per gallon, so an accurate volume keeps your water balanced and avoids over- or under-dosing. It also sizes the pump and filter for proper turnover.
